DUALITY AND BALANCE IN LAURA LEAL’S SCULPTURE
By: Lily Kassner
After getting her degree in psychology, Laura Leal turned to her artistic vocation as a priority. In this field she is practically self-taught, having taken only a few courses in ceramics and stone sculpting with local artists. She also attended the photography workshops taught by Gabriela Iturbide, Yolanda Andrade and Rogelio Cuellar.
She’s had several successful exhibitions in ceramics, photography and her signature three-dimensional work —the broadest expression of her plastic artwork— in countless shows in Mexico and abroad. Laura knows how to combine skillfully and relevantly sculpting stone and wood in numerous pieces, where the varied stone materials of Mexican quarry stone appear alone or symbolically associated and united, in a single sculpted production, with arboreal materials obtained preferably from her native land.
This artistic procedure has been intensified and perfected to a level of virtuosity in her recent production by putting together an interesting collection that reflects her intention of manifesting her art in the field of organic abstractionism, which we can trace back to her early days and in which she has accomplished her greatest achievements.
Now, however, this line is remarkably enhanced by her will to add formal variations extensively and meticulously which show her partiality for the baroque style while keeping to her core line —abstractionism—which she defines as: to consider a quality of an object or the essence of the same object separately.
Her multiple and varied production, the use of materials native to her home —some of which are unprecedented in sculpture— and, above all, the formal perfection of the rendition, put Laura Leal in the spotlight of three dimensional art in modern day Mexico.
Apart from the inherent esthetic qualities of her work, inserted in an original concept organic abstractionism, the search for different types of wood, roots, tree trunks and branches —almost always of a baroque conformation, a kind of object trouvé, which are the basis for creating her pieces to which she accurately adds and incorporates foreshortening that seems to pick up the original tracing or cut it short, t create valuable artistic expressions with an exacting and vague balance between organic levity and mineral weight.
She recently shared with us her plans for incorporating other materials, such as marble, onyx and jade from the rich Mexican quarries into her future creations.
Another original trait of this local artist who, like Constantin Brancusi, also creates the solid or base on which she exhibits her sculptures, is the harmonious dialog between the raw materials that highlight their affinity or underscore their contrast.
In her maturity, the mastery of the techniques of her profession and the primordial conception of her esthetic contributions, Laura Leal now offers us creative testimonials that confirm an earlier opinion of her work: “… she holds a commanding place in the three-dimensional art of our times in Mexico.
