Laura Leal and Her Sculptural Poetics
By Luis Carlos Emerich
Among the vast diversity of materials Laura Leal has used in her sculptural works, rock crystal is the only one that possess an ancient symbolic baggage all its own. Although some believe it is endowed with magical, psychic, and healing powers, as well as the power to attract favors from the spirit world, and even that it is a “living stone”, its only provable feature is that of regulating electrical impulses. But what is certain is that Laura Leal has chosen blue rock crystal -beyond its inherent beauty- to project to new planes of meaning the unifying topic of her entire work, that is, the metaphoric materialization of a range of moods so different from one another like those suggested by the original conformations of her materials which she chooses because of their potential to allude to psychic structures without having to shape them and, above all, to use the reflections and refraction of light on the finely sculpted and polished bodies as sculptural elements. It is the myriad chromatic hues and intensities created by the light on the surface and through the material's soul that render a kind of inner latency to volumetric forms that would otherwise be totally abstract without this luminous breath of life. Unlike the use of artificial light to reveal the forms generated by translucent and irregular materials, such as in her sculptures made of plastic bags and containers, the flow of light on and through the various densities and volumes of a crystalline medium creates the illusion that a material that is so hard and yet so fragile has become malleable and sensitive to the touch.
This virtual malleability is the product of hard, hazardous and drawn out manual work that could constitute a conceptual proposal in and of itself. However it is clear that her objective is to imbue the rock crystal with the illusion of possessing organic consistency, and the nuance of its intense blue color, the illusion of generating its own light -both of which can be extrapolated to the human condition. This would suffice to ensure that this is the quality and depth of what Laura Leal has put of herself into her work, and is made more evident still when her sculptures are confronted, as on this occasion, with works created by the opposite process, to wit, by gathering, combining and binding discarded industrial materials together that require artificial light to tout the composition dynamics of their elements, which is her raison-d’etat.
Be that as it may, perhaps the greatest contrast is that her rock crystal sculptures are perceived as metaphors, because her ability of turning one material into an emotional continent as she has done in all her work, has shown forth with such distinctive proposes throughout her career that collectively they already embody an entire objectual-poetic introspective system in continuous expansion and diversification. These sculptures -especially in stark contrast with the impersonality of contemporary art- are infused with a sense of human warmth, at times dramatic, at other times sensual, but always provocative, and deep down perhaps not so indifferent to the magic attributed to this material even today.
Laura Leal y su poética escultórica
By Luis Carlos Emerich
